At the start of last season I picked up a Large Drystein jacket in the Hot Rod color. I have used it all winter for ice and mixed climbing, and ski mountaineering in the Alaska Range.
The Good:
I was initially blown away by the awesome breathability, nice soft feel, and ease of movement when wearing the jacket. The jacket has a pretty clean design, and the stretch panels under the arms are great!

The Bad:
I have noticed other people mention they were concerned about the sticky zippers... Well, after about 3 months of casual weekend use, mine blew out... Mountain Hardwear fixed the zipper under warranty, but did a really poor job. The new zipper is crooked, looks sloppy, and they didn't even seal up the new seams! A 425 dollar jacket should last longer than 3 months, and if I had blown an Arcteryx, OR, Patagonia, or Marmot zipper, I would have received a brand new jacket.. Not a messy patch-job!
In order for this piece to really live up to its claim of being "the most versatile, well-fitting alpine climbing shell on the market," three changes should be made:
Firstly: The pockets are not functional with a harness as advertised. They should be moved up about 2-3 inches.
Secondly: The neck collar should extend further up over the face for additional protection from wind and cold.
Thirdly: The piece needs a zipper that slides freely and is durable enough to stand up to years of use!
In conclusion, Dry Q fabric is awesome, but it can't compensate for lack of quality, and poor design. The Drystein is like a half-developed prototype for what could be a really, really sick shell. If a redesigned version came out I would probably give it another go.
I do not recommend this product.

I've never understood how anyone could stay dry while skinning the backcountry. Nothing I've ever worn was very good at releasing the perspiration. Waterproof is easy, not toiling inside a greenhouse and soaking underlayers is a whole 'nother game. So I'll preface my review with this statement: the jacket isn't perfect, but it is light years ahead of my goretex pro that is only a couple of years old. Wet, heavy snowfall to rain, never permeated the fabric. Working hard, get a little damp but nothing like the past. Within minutes most of the moisture has been released and the only place that still feels moist is my back, because of my pack. Although when I shed my pack for any length of time, my back dries just as rapidly. The breathability of this jacket is remarkable. Sizing wise, I went with the XL for my monkey arms as I prefer my cuffs not to drop to my elbows when climbing and for a little extra room as I like to throw on a down sweater around base camp or for extended respites. I also gave a minor ding for quality as I'm not sure how I feel about the hood yet. The top cinch goes over the top of the hood, as opposed to around the melon, which requires you to snug it up around the face as well, otherwise it's like a rubberband rolling off a pear. Generally speaking, if I'm skinning while it is precipitating, I like to leave the hood loose with the just the top snug and loose around the face to allow air into the hood and around my head, but with the breathability of the fabric it may be a wash. As stated by other reviewers, the breathability causes the jacket to feel cooler than other shells, so be prepared to add a layer if not working too hard.
I would recommend this product.

Does everything it's supposed to do. Found this to be as waterproof as my 3 layer gore jacket, and much lighter, softer, and much more flexible. I backpack in the cold and found this to be a perfect shell layer for mixed wet & freezing conditions. Taking this one to the rainy northwest next, with confidence, to run it though everything the Olympics and Cascades have to offer. My new #1 choice.
I would recommend this product.

Most functional shell I've ever worn. 100% waterproof and breathes like a wind shirt. Perfect high activity/ wet conditions jacket (ice climbing). I usually wear a medium but had to go with a large. The med. was way too tight in the arms and the chest (5'10", 170lbs.). The zipper's a little funky but is fully functional so far. Excellent material!
I would recommend this product.

This is an all-around bomber jacket! From the moment you first try it on and pull that "tight" zipper you feel the true quality and majesty of this incredible shell. The softshell panels on the front and underarms allow for great breathability and STRETCH offering excellent mobility and temperature regulation. The other neat thing about this shells increased breathability is that there is no need for pit zips. The 40D nylon is burly yet lightweight and highly abrasion resistant. All great things do however have their weaknesses. I would raise the "chest high" side pockets 0.5-1 inch as they aren't very useful while wearing a harness. I would cover the outside edge of the cuff tabs with tape- not just the ends- as mine began to fray after a days use pulling gloves on and off. Lastly, I'd lengthen the tab which stows the hood as it forces the brim to crinkle when stowed.
I would recommend this product.

Perfect Jacket for every Conditions

Everything from rain to snow. Backpacking to snowboarding the back country in Colorado, this Jacket does it all! I love the roll up hood and I am amazed at versatility. Great range of motion, can and will go anywhere. I just wear my monkey fleece under this shell and I have yet to be cold. The DryQ technology is spot on. I am always dry, and have plenty of options when hiking up to the untouched powder to open some vents to keep my body temperature down and snow away from my base layers. Overall: I never leave home without it.

Really Good, but....

First of all, this is an awesome jacket. The Dry-Q (Entrant) membrane blocks wind and water like a Gore shell, but breathes like a hoodie. However, the main zipper is scary stiff (feels like I'll rip something every time I zip the jacket up). The main pockets are big and low enough that they don't really work well with a pack on, yet don't fit climbing skins (and the North Face, Patagonia, and Arcteryx shell's I've used or tried on do fit skins). The hood doesn't fit well with a helmet on, yet is floppy and sloppy without a helmet. Despite these reservations, I'd still reccomend this jacket, but.....
Columbia owns Mt. Hardwear, and their version of this shell (the Peak 2 Peak) fits the same, weights less, and costs $50 or so less.

I first used my Drystein Jacket in Oct. 2011 on a backpacking trip in the Shenendoah mountains. It was a perfect trip to test gear for an upcoming Patagonia trek. It was raining/sleeting/snowing continuously for about 24 hours. Setting-up and taking-down my tent in freezing rain was quite bearable in the Drystein, combined with Epic pants and Epic gloves. I stayed completely dry and warm with an omniwool base layer and synthetic tee shirt. I just returned from the Patagonia trek (Nov/Dec) that began with similar conditions. We backpacked from Torres Paine Grande to Camp Britannico in Chile. As we approached Camp Britannico, the conditions became increasingly wet and cold, with freezing rain and snow. Again the Drystein did not dissappoint. The jacket fits nicely under a backpack, looks very sharp, and is very comfortable.

DryQ beats Gore

The material and build of the jacket is phenomenal. DryQ will hopefully help take down the Gore empire as it's far superior in terms of breathability and feel against the skin. The jacket itself can take a solid bruising, and coupled with a insulation piece in really cold weather would be unbeatable.

Quality that can't be matched

The quality of the build on the shell is top notch. Every seam is sealed and reinforced. DryQ Elite: when they say waterproof, they mean waterproof. The cut of the arms by the wrist is a tad small for my liking... going to use this with the Nittous down sweater... should be a sweet combo!

Drystein Jacket odd cut

I was looking for a lightweight waterproof shell that I could put in my pack to throw on at the top of a climb before skiing down. The "athletic" fit that this jacket has is an understatement to say the least. I bought the men's small as I am a small guy. The jacket was so tight across my ribs (I am not overweight at all) that it was only comfortable with a T shirt on under it. I tried it with a fleece under and it was way to tight. I could barely get it zipped up over my avalanche beacon. Even though the body was extremely tight, the arms were slightly long. I called to return it and the customer service person was very helpful and told me that he had tried it on and also found it very tight. He looked up the measurements on the medium and it was bigger in the body but the arms were so much longer it wouldn't have fit right.

Just received this and took it for a test during 25 mph wind with temps in the mid 50's during a recent fish in the Upper Midwest. Having a light DriRelease T and Midweight power dry grid top were a bit overkill for the conditions, but NEVER overheated. Hiked in the river for hours with stop and go constantly. Never got cold or had condensation build up! I own several pieces of top tier WWB textile based garments and this has by far exceeded my expectations. Dry Q Elite does exactly as stated.I got back to my truck after a long hike to find no condensations build up again in the jacket. The fit is very alpine, but you can fit a base layer and moderate mid layer underneath. Pockets are ample, and the stretch woven fabric in the arm pits is a very nice touch, better than zips. Arm length perfect for 6'3" with no ride up when raising arms. Zips are bit sticky...who cares

Drystein is GREAT!

Having worked in theh outdoor industry for 5 years, I have tried all different types of waterproof-breathable outerwear. The Drystein jacket is the best I have tried! It is "soft," not "crunchy" and loud like most other jackets, and the water beads off of it really really well. I would highly recommend this jacket!

this jacket is great!

this jacket is just what i was looking for. it's lightweight, doesn't have all the extra pockets and zippers that i don't need, and fits great, both around the torso, arms and hood. it is exactly what i imagined for a hard shell: something small, easy to throw on, lightweight and will protect me against all alpine elements.
